Hope for Veterans Program-Housing Opportunities for Veterans

Finding stable housing is a critical step for many veterans on their path to recovery and independence. Below is the most up-to-date information on available beds and program details across several veteran housing programs in New Jersey. Admission to all programs requires a completed application and supporting paperwork.

Hope for Veterans Program – Lyons VA Campus, Lyons, NJ
Clinical Treatment (CT) – 8 Beds Available

9-month program with a strong clinical focus on substance use and mental health.
Helps veterans stabilize, increase income through benefits or employment, and transition to permanent housing.
Applicants must have a mental health diagnosis and/or substance use disorder.
Documentation of diagnosis, recent records, and progress notes are required.

Service Intensive (SI) – 7 Beds Available

6-month program focused on increasing income and securing permanent housing.
Provides case management support throughout.

Bridge Housing (BH) – 2 Beds Available (Female Veterans Only)

3-month short-term stay for veterans with a housing plan already in place.
Must have a HUD-VASH voucher or confirmed move-in date.

Alfred J. Thomas (AJT) Home for Veterans – Garfield, NJ
AJT Program – 2 Beds Available

A collaborative program with Bergen County.
Offers case management with a focus on increasing income and transitioning to permanent housing.
Similar in structure to the Service Intensive program at Hope for Veterans.

Women Veteran Housing (WVH) Program – Morris Plains, NJ
WVH – 2 Beds Available

Permanent housing exclusively for female veterans.
Provides supportive case management, affordable housing, and ongoing counseling.
Operates under a leasing agreement to promote long-term stability.

General Eligibility for All Programs
To qualify, veterans must be able to:

  • Live independently in a communal setting.
  • Self-evacuate in emergencies and demonstrate basic self-preservation skills.
  • Manage daily activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and maintaining a clean living space.
  • Prepare their own meals or access the VA Cafeteria (meals are not provided).
  • Maintain sobriety throughout their stay; sober living is a requirement.
