About Habitat for Humanity of South Central New Jersey
Our Mission
Putting faith into action, Habitat for Humanity of South Central New Jersey brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
Vision
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Who We Serve
At Habitat, we build homes, communities, and hope.
Habitat does not give away houses. We partner with hard-working families who dream of homeownership and are willing to work for it. We offer affordable mortgages with little down payment required, and Habitat homeowners make monthly mortgage payments that don’t exceed 30% of their gross monthly income.
Habitat homeowners are determined to create a permanent solution to their housing struggles. Each Habitat partner family must complete 250 to 400 hours of “sweat equity” to build their home.
Our Homes
All Habitat homes are built following three principles:
- Simple: Habitat homes are modestly-sized. They are large enough for the homeowner family’s needs, but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs to a minimum.
- Decent: Habitat for Humanity uses quality, locally-available building materials. Habitat house designs reflect the local climate and culture.
- Affordable: The labor of volunteers and partner families, efficient building methods, modest house sizes, and no-profit loans make it affordable for all families to purchase Habitat houses.
In addition to new construction, we renovate and provide repairs for local homeowners in need.
Why Homeownership Matters
In addition to the financial advantages of owning a home, there are many social benefits of owning a home as well. Homeownership gives families stability, creates lower high school dropout rates, and of course gives the opportunity to create meaningful and lasting relationships.
Our Services
Neighborhood Revitalization
- By providing affordable home repairs, our Neighborhood Revitalization Program preserves homeownership for low-income residents while addressing critical health and safety concerns.
- With our skilled construction staff and the help of volunteers, qualified homeowners can find help with a variety of interior and exterior repairs. Partnering homeowners are left with a new sense of pride and the ability to enjoy their homes for years to come.

Homeownership Program
- No matter who you are or where you come from, everyone deserves a decent, safe place to live. Habitat for Humanity SCNJ provides opportunities for families in need to build brighter futures for themselves and their children.
- Through Habitat’s Homeownership Program, individuals who might not otherwise qualify for a traditional mortgage can still achieve the dream of owning a home.
- How it Works: The Homeownership Program is designed for low to moderate income families to purchase a home with an affordable mortgage. Our families work hard to create a permanent solution to their housing struggles. Each Habitat partner family must complete 250 to 400 hours of “sweat equity” to build their home and the homes of other Habitat families, work in our ReStore, and complete financial, budgeting, and credit education workshops.

Financial Education Classes
- Household finances are a source of stress, no matter the size of your income or family, and we want to help alleviate any concerns or barriers on your path to homeownership.
- At Habitat, we provide the support to help prepare you for the day you receive your keys, and well beyond. One way we do that is through financial education. We believe that financial education leads to a greater investment in the home and builds a solid foundation for long-term personal success.

Veterans Build
- Our Veterans Build initiative is designed to provide assistance to military and veteran families through our Affordable Homeownership and Repairs programs. We match active-duty military service members, veterans, and community organizations with military families to provide Habitat services for local veterans.
