Dignity Beyond Borders
About Dignity Beyond Borders
Dignity Beyond Borders is a nonprofit dedicated to building resilience among people around the world impacted by terrorism, war, and mass violence. We help people rebuild after loss—not just recover, but grow. By connecting individuals and families with others who understand their experience, we end the isolation trauma creates. Through mental-health support and dignity-based practices, we help people heal, rediscover their worth, and find renewed purpose. We are led by a team that has been immersed in this work with 9/11 families, military families, and communities affected by global violence for over two decades.
Programs
- Project COMMON BOND (est. 2008 by young adults who lost a parent on 9/11): A week-long international peace summit that has welcomed more than 1,300 young leaders from 38 countries. Participants share stories, build cross-cultural understanding, and develop leadership skills centered on dignity.
- 9/11 Wellness Retreats Spaces for healing and reconnection for 9/11 surviving spouses and families—especially meaningful as we mark the 25th anniversary.
- Women’s World Peace Trauma-informed retreats for international military widows that rebuild safety, dignity, and a global network of peace.
- Mothers for Dignity Healing retreats for mothers who have lost children to mass violence, helping them process grief and reclaim hope.
- Dignity in Action Training that helps organizations build workplaces rooted in trust, respect, and mutual dignity.
Our Approach
We create safe, supportive spaces where survivors can process grief, build resilience, and develop the skills needed to heal and thrive. Our programs are facilitated by trained mental health clinicians, creative arts therapists, and conflict-resolution practitioners who bring decades of experience working with trauma survivors worldwide.
At the heart of our work is the Dignity Model, developed by Donna Hicks, a leading researcher at Harvard University and President of our Board of Directors. The model illuminates how dignity influences our relationships, identity, and capacity to heal after adversity. By integrating dignity-centered principles throughout our programs, we help participants restore a sense of self-worth, rebuild trust, and create meaningful pathways toward healing and growth.
