About Association for Mental Health and Wellness

Empowering and inspiring people of all communities to identify, pursue and sustain healthy, meaningful lives.

As the local chapter of Mental Health America and of the Mental Health Association of New York State, it is our mission to drive evidence-based practices, information, education, and resources to the residents of Suffolk County.

We believe mental health is as important as physical health, and it is our goal to ensure that all of our local needs and voices are heard and recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups, and educational organizations in our region.

Suffolk County United Veterans (SCUV)

Suffolk County is home to more Veterans than any of the state’s 62 counties. That means we have a special responsibility to help ensure that those who have served our country receive appropriate support when it comes to securing appropriate affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, and other necessary supportive services.

Founded in 1989 by a Vietnam War veteran, Suffolk County United Veterans (SCUV) initially focused on meeting the housing needs of the county’s homeless Veterans. As the years passed, SCUV’s mission would expand to include a broad range of support services, all dedicated to maintaining the dignity and self-sufficiency of returning Veterans.

Today, as a program of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW), SCUV is even stronger, coordinating an interrelated and comprehensive set of services all aimed at integrating those who return from combat into civilian life.

Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Project – Suffolk County

Named to honor the memory of an Iraq war hero from Mount Sinai, NY, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer program for Veterans facing the challenges of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Launched in 2012 as a pilot partnership between the Suffolk County United Veterans program and the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency, the Dwyer Project takes a confidential, one-on-one, peer-to-peer approach that has rapidly captured the attention and support of both veterans and mental health professionals statewide and across the nation.

The program has steadily demonstrated that the peer-to-peer model holds tremendous, untapped value as a tool for helping Veterans transition and reintegrate back into civilian life.

Through the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, we are proud to have taken a leadership role in piloting this innovative program that will soon serve as a national model for Veterans assistance. We are also indebted to the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency for the critical role they have played as a partner in supporting the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project.
